Tamei: The Touch Jesus Chose
A pre-arranged, consented shoulder touch shows the shock of Jesus touching the man with leprosy. The point is not casual physical contact, but holy compassion moving towards the isolated.
Big Idea
Jesus does not catch uncleanness from the broken; His holiness moves towards them and makes them clean.
Delivery Script
Hook Matthew places this healing straight after the Sermon on the Mount. The King who teaches with authority now moves with compassion.
1. Set the scene. There is a man in Matthew 8 who has not been touched in a very long time. [walk slowly towards the volunteer seated slightly apart from the group] This person has already agreed to be part of what you are about to see. I want to say that clearly. [stop before touching, turn briefly to the room] In this demonstration, this person has already given consent.
2. Name the law. Before we see what Jesus does, we have to feel what the law required. [open Bible, read Leviticus 13:45-46] The man with leprosy had to tear his clothes. Cover his lip. Call out, Unclean, unclean. Tamei. It meant unclean. And that word did not just describe a condition. It created a wall. Distance, enforced, daily, loudly, around the sufferer.
3. Sit with that. Think about what it costs a person to live inside that word. [pause, let the room be still] Not just the illness. The isolation. No one drawing near. Everyone learning, over time, to look away.
4. The touch. Then Matthew 8 verse 3. [place hand gently on the volunteer's shoulder, or use the agreed gesture, pause in silence] [read Matthew 8:3] Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him. Before the cleansing was visible. Before the skin changed. He reached first.
5. Name the shock. [step back, face the room] In that world, touch moved contamination towards you. The unclean thing made you unclean. Everyone knew that. Everyone except Jesus. Because this is not permission to ignore boundaries. It is revelation: the Holy One moves towards the one everybody else has learned to avoid. Uncleanness did not overpower Him. His holiness moved the other way.
Land Jesus then sends the man to the priest, just as Moses commanded. He does not dismantle the law. He fulfils it, by being the one whose touch changes the direction of everything. So the church does not imitate Jesus by reckless contact. We imitate Him by refusing to let fear and contempt decide who receives mercy.
Call to action Choose one person on the edge of your life and move towards them this week with dignity, consent and Christlike mercy.

Props & Setup
Props Required
- 1Pre-briefed volunteerSomeone who has clearly agreed to a shoulder touch or alternative gesture.
- 2ChairPlaced slightly apart to represent isolation without shaming the volunteer.
- 3BibleOpen to Matthew 8:1-4 and Leviticus 13:45.
Setup Instructions
- 1Ask the volunteer before the service what form of contact, if any, is acceptable. Seat them where the room can see them without making them feel exposed.
Stage Execution
- 1Walk towards the pre-briefed volunteer seated slightly apart. Stop before touching and say, 'In this demonstration, this person has already given consent.'
- 2Read Leviticus 13:45-46 briefly. Say, 'Tamei meant unclean. The word created distance around the sufferer.'
- 3Place your hand gently on the volunteer's shoulder, or use the agreed non-touch gesture. Pause.
- 4Read Matthew 8:3. 'Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him before the cleansing was visible.'
- 5Step back and say, 'This is not permission to ignore boundaries. It is revelation: the Holy One moves towards the one everybody else has learned to avoid.'
Safety Notes
Never touch someone unexpectedly or identify a real person as overlooked. Use a pre-consented volunteer, or replace touch with an open-handed gesture. Respect trauma histories, disability needs and cultures where public touch is inappropriate.
Theological Grounding
Leviticus guarded Israel's worship by naming ritual uncleanness and keeping certain conditions outside the camp. In Matthew 8, Jesus does not despise that holiness framework; He fulfils it by touching the man and making him clean, then sending him to the priest as Moses commanded. The direction of transfer is the gospel shock: uncleanness does not overpower Christ, Christ's cleansing power overcomes uncleanness.
Preacher Tips
- Say the consent line aloud. It teaches the room how to apply compassion without violating people.
- Do not choose someone who is actually marginalised in the congregation. That turns a sermon into exposure.
- Touch the shoulder briefly and calmly if consented. Lingering contact can feel theatrical or invasive.
- If the room includes children, explain that Jesus' touch was loving and safe, but we still ask permission before touching people.
If Things Go Wrong
1The volunteer looks uncomfortable.
Recovery: Stop immediately, thank them and switch to the non-touch gesture.
2Someone laughs because the staging feels awkward.
Recovery: Let it pass and return to the Bible: for this man, distance was not funny.
3People hear this as permission to ignore health boundaries
Recovery: Recover by naming that Jesus heals, but we still act with wisdom and consent.
4The focus shifts to modern disease stigma.
Recovery: Keep the wording on isolation, shame and mercy rather than medical comparison.
Adaptations
young children
Use two toy figures, one far away and one moving kindly towards them. Say, Jesus came near to help.
older children
Let them suggest kind ways to include someone without touching: sitting nearby, listening, inviting or praying.
small group
Discuss where fear, disgust or social habit makes people keep distance from those Jesus receives.
academic
Explore purity, contagion and holiness in Leviticus, then compare Matthew, Mark and Luke's wording of Jesus' touch.
Response Prompts
1.Who do I keep at a distance because it feels easier?
2.How can compassion move towards people while still honouring boundaries?
3.What does Jesus' touch reveal about His holiness?
Application Questions
- 1Where has fear disguised itself as holiness in me?
- 2What boundary-aware act of mercy is God asking from our church?
Call to Action
Choose one person on the edge of your life and move towards them this week with dignity, consent and Christlike mercy.
Focus Note
Keep the volunteer's dignity central. Do not call them unclean, rejected or lonely. Let the prop position carry the meaning.
Cultural Notes
Public touch has different meanings across cultures, ages and genders. This demo should be adapted with a bow, hand-over-heart gesture, spoken blessing or proximity when touch would distract from the gospel point.
