Stepping Stones: The Next Step Established
Paper stepping stones across a marked river help children see Psalm 37:23 as steady guidance: God establishes the steps of those who delight in His way.
Big Idea
Faithfulness often means trusting God for the next established step before the whole river is crossed.
Delivery Script
Hook Children often ask what comes next. Psalm 37 gives a faithful way to think about next steps.
1. Show the river. Here is our river. [gesture along the blue cloth or tape on the floor] It looks wide. It looks uncertain. And right here, just at the edge, is one stepping stone. [point to the first stone] Just one.
2. Invite a volunteer. I need someone steady and brave. [choose one child, bring them to stand beside you] Now. Look across that river. Does anyone know every stone before they take the first step? No. And here is what I want you to hear: you do not need to leap over the whole river. You need the next safe stone.
3. First step. [guide the volunteer onto stone one, slowly] There it is. Established. Solid. One step. That is enough for now.
4. Keep going, one at a time. [guide the volunteer forward, one stone at a time, pausing between each] Not the whole river. Just the next stone. Then the next. Watch how it works. You only ever need the one in front of you.
5. Stop halfway, read the verse. [hold up the verse card and read aloud] Psalm 37:23. "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in the Lord's way." Established. Not guessed at. Not stumbled into. Established, by Him, for the one who walks in His way.
6. Finish the path. [nod to the volunteer to take the remaining stones, steadily] Keep going. No rushing. [let them cross to the other side] Look at that. All the way across. One stone at a time.
7. Name the truth. God does not always show every stone at once. But He establishes the steps of the one who delights in His way. Verse 24 tells us we may still stumble. But it also tells us we will not be thrown down, because the Lord holds our hand.
Land Faithfulness is not about seeing the whole river before you move. It is about trusting the One who places the next stone under your foot. So this week, do not demand the whole river. Ask God for the next faithful step.
Call to action Take one established step in God's way before demanding sight of the whole route.

Theological Grounding
Psalm 37:23 belongs to a wisdom psalm contrasting the way of the wicked with trust in the Lord. The established steps are not a guarantee that every personal plan is automatically endorsed; verse 24 admits stumbling while promising the Lord's upholding hand. The emphasis is faithful walking in God's way under His care.
Preacher Tips
- Use the word established, not just guessed. The verse is about the Lord's ordering care.
- Keep the volunteer slow and calm. A playful demo can become unsafe if children start jumping.
- Do not imply God reveals only one tiny instruction forever. The point is trustful obedience when the whole future is not visible.
- Read verse 24 if any child mentions falling; it gives comfort without pretending falls never happen.
If Things Go Wrong
1A stepping stone slips.
Recovery: Stop immediately, remove the volunteer, and use your hand to point through the path instead.
2Children shout silly directions.
Recovery: Pause and say, "One trusted voice gives the next step." Then continue.
3The illustration becomes generic life advice.
Recovery: Return to Psalm 37:23 and the phrase "the Lord establishes."
Adaptations
teens
Name decision pressure and ask what next step is already clear from Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel.
small group
Place verse cards on the floor and invite members to name one faithful next step privately.
online
Use a tabletop path of cards and move a small figure one step at a time.
Response Prompts
1.Did the volunteer need the whole crossing at once?
2.Who establishes the steps in Psalm 37:23?
3.What is one faithful next step you already know?
Application Questions
- 1Where am I refusing the next step because I want the whole map?
- 2How does Psalm 37:24 comfort me when I stumble?
Call to Action
Take one established step in God's way before demanding sight of the whole route.
Focus Note
This volunteer crossed by taking the next stone, not by flying over the river. Psalm 37 is wisdom for people who can see evil around them and may feel anxious about the future. It tells us that the Lord establishes the steps of a person whose way delights Him. Verse 24 is honest too: even if he falls, the Lord upholds him. Guidance is not panic-free prediction. It is walking with God.
Cultural Notes
River-crossing imagery may be familiar or unfamiliar depending on setting. Use a road crossing, stepping marks, or a simple path of cards if a river picture distracts.
