Solar Toy: Powered by Borrowed Light
A solar-powered toy that only moves in light gives children a clear picture of dependence: Jesus is the light of the world, and His followers live by light they did not create.
Big Idea
We do not make Jesus' light; we come into it and learn to walk there.
Delivery Script
Hook Jesus gives children a picture they already understand: light helps us see and live. And I have something here that knows exactly what I mean.
1. Show the stillness. Look at this little toy. [hold the toy in the shade] It is made to move. It wants to move. But watch what happens without light. [pause, let it sit completely still] Nothing. It cannot do what it was made to do.
2. Bring it into light. Now watch. [move the toy into the lamp or sunlight and let it begin moving] There it goes. But here is the thing, and do not miss this: it did not make the light. It received the light. All it did was come into what was already there.
3. Read the promise. Jesus said this. [read John 8:12 clearly and slowly] "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The light belongs to Jesus. Always has. Always will.
4. Cover the light. [cover the toy with the box or cloth, let it go still again] Darkness is not just the absence of a lamp. It is what happens when we drift away from Him. When we stop listening. When we try to go our own way. Still. Lost. Going nowhere.
5. Return to light. [move the toy back into the light] The toy works when it is in the light. God's children learn to live by the light of Jesus. Not by being clever enough, or good enough, or bright enough on their own. By staying near Him.
6. Say it together. Can you point upward or towards the Bible? [prompt children to point] Say it with me: "Jesus is the light."
Land So when we are confused, afraid, or tempted to hide, we come back into the light of Jesus. We did not make it. We cannot earn it. We simply choose to stay where the light already shines.
Call to action When you see light this week, whisper: "Jesus, help me follow You."

Setup Instructions

- 3Place the toy where everyone can see it or use a camera close-up.
- 4Mark John 8:12.
Stage Execution
- 1Show the toy in the shade. Say: "It is made to move, but watch what happens without light."

- 3Move the toy into the light and let it begin moving. Smile and say: "It did not make the light. It received the light."
- 4Read John 8:12 in one clear sentence.
- 5Cover the light again. "Jesus says whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness. That means we stay near Him and listen to Him."
- 6Move it back into the light. "The toy works when it is in the light. God's children learn to live by the light of Jesus."
- 7Ask the children to point upward or towards the Bible and say together: "Jesus is the light."
Safety Notes
Use a small low-voltage solar toy. Do not shine bright lamps into children's eyes. Check button batteries are sealed and inaccessible.
Theological Grounding
In John 8:12 Jesus identifies Himself as the light of the world and promises that the one following Him will not walk in darkness but have the light of life. The image is not generic positivity; it is discipleship language. Light belongs to Christ, and His followers receive direction and life by following Him.
Preacher Tips
- Test the toy. Some solar toys need stronger light than a normal room provides.
- Keep the dark moment brief for young children. The joy is in the movement when light returns.
- Do not say children stop working when away from Jesus in a shaming way. Say we need His light to see and live well.
- Use simple repeated language: Jesus is the light; we follow Jesus.
- If the toy is tiny, use a camera or gather children closer while keeping aisles clear.
If Things Go Wrong
1The toy does not move.
Recovery: Use it anyway: "This toy needs more light, and so do we." Then hold up the Bible and continue.
2Children crowd the lamp.
Recovery: Keep the toy on a table and invite them to watch from a marked line.
3The lamp is too bright.
Recovery: Angle it down at the toy and away from faces.
4The illustration becomes about trying harder.
Recovery: Repeat: "The toy receives light. We receive Jesus' light."
Adaptations
older children
Let them predict whether shade or light will move the toy, then connect following Jesus with walking in light.
teens
Use a phone in low-power mode as a contrast, but keep the point on borrowed power and direction.
small group
Ask where people are trying to generate their own light instead of following Christ.
camp
Use direct sunlight and let the movement happen naturally, avoiding extra equipment.
Response Prompts
1.Who is the light of the world?
2.What helps us stay near Jesus' light?
3.Where do you need Jesus to help you see today?
Application Questions
- 1Am I walking by Christ's light or by my own guesses?
- 2What darkness do I need to bring into His light?
- 3How can adults make Jesus' light visible to children without fear?
Call to Action
When you see light this week, whisper: "Jesus, help me follow You."
Focus Note
This toy cannot boast about moving. It moves because light reaches it. We also need light we did not make. Jesus is that light.
Cultural Notes
Solar toys may be unfamiliar or unavailable in some places. Use any safe light-responsive object, a torch in a dark box, or a plant turning towards light. The biblical point is dependence on Christ's light.
