Shield of Faith: Darts Put Out
Foam darts labelled lies, fear, and shame are deflected by a shield, helping older children and youth see faith as active trust in God's truth under attack.
Big Idea
Faith is not pretending the darts are harmless; faith takes up God's truth until accusation loses its fire.
Delivery Script
Hook Paul's armour image is not decoration. It is for real pressure against God's people. And right now, I want to show you what happens when the pressure hits.
1. Shield down. [hold the shield at your side, not raised] A shield does nothing while it is lying on the floor. You could own the finest armour in the world, and if it is at your feet, it cannot protect you. Remember that.
2. Read the command. [open to Ephesians 6:16 and read it aloud] Hear that word. Not "admire the shield." Not "believe shields exist." Take. It. Up. That is active. That is a choice made under pressure.
3. Block the lie. [invite the volunteer behind the tape line, ask them to toss the dart labelled "lies" at the shield, lift the shield and block it] Watch. [lift the shield] That dart is labelled "lies." You know the ones. "You are too far gone. God could not want you." Faith answers lies with what God has said. His word is truer than the voice in your head.
4. Block the fear. [volunteer tosses the dart labelled "fear", block it with the shield] Fear. It whispers that the worst will happen, that God will not hold. But the Lord is with me. That is not a feeling. That is a fact He has spoken. Faith holds the promise when the fear is loudest.
5. Block the shame. [volunteer tosses the dart labelled "shame", block it] Shame. It says you are defined by what you have done. But Christ has cleansed you. Faith does not deny the past; it holds up what God has declared over it.
6. Shield down. [lower the shield deliberately, let one dart land near your feet, not on your body] Now watch this. When faith is not taken up, accusation gets closer. It does not disappear because you ignore it. It lands. And it stays.
7. Raise it again. [raise the shield firmly] Faith is active trust. It does not admire the armour from a distance. It takes it up. Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing the word of Christ. You feed faith on what God has spoken, and that truth extinguishes what the enemy throws.
Land God has not given you a shield to hang on the wall. He has given you His truth to hold up under real attack, real accusation, real fear. So do not leave faith on the floor. Take up what God has spoken in Christ.
Call to action Write one Scripture truth on a card and use it this week when accusation comes.

Safety Notes
Use only soft foam darts thrown by hand or from a low-power toy, never aimed at the face. Keep volunteers behind a marked line and stop immediately if anyone gets excited or careless.
Theological Grounding
Ephesians 6:16 calls believers to take up the shield of faith in all circumstances. The Greek term points to a large shield, and Paul's emphasis is not self-confidence but trust that receives and holds God's promise. Faith extinguishes flaming darts because it relocates the believer inside God's truth rather than inside accusation, fear, or shame.
Preacher Tips
- Keep the action slow and controlled. Youth demos become unsafe when speed becomes entertainment.
- Use accusation labels that are common but not too personal. Avoid naming private sins from the front.
- Say a Scripture-shaped truth after each dart. The shield is faith in God, not positive thinking.
- Do not let volunteers shoot at people. The shield is the only target.
- End with prayer, not triumphal posing. Spiritual warfare is serious.
If Things Go Wrong
1Volunteers throw too hard or aim badly.
Recovery: Stop, collect the darts, and continue by placing them against the shield yourself.
2The demo becomes a game and loses gravity.
Recovery: Read the verse again and name real accusations people carry.
3A dart hits someone.
Recovery: Pause, check they are fine, and end the throwing portion.
4Faith sounds like denial of pain.
Recovery: Say: "Faith names the dart honestly, then holds God's word higher."
Adaptations
young children
Use paper balls labelled scary words and a large heart shield labelled God helps me trust.
older children
Let children choose a truth verse to tape onto the shield after each dart.
small group
Name common darts privately on cards, then pair each with a Scripture promise.
online
Use animated slide labels moving towards a shield graphic.
Response Prompts
1.Which dart hits you most often: lies, fear, or shame?
2.What truth of God belongs on your shield?
3.What does taking up faith look like before the next attack?
Application Questions
- 1Do I treat faith as active trust or vague optimism?
- 2What lies do I need God's Word to extinguish?
- 3Who can stand with me when my shield feels heavy?
Call to Action
Write one Scripture truth on a card and use it this week when accusation comes.
Focus Note
The darts have names because attacks often come with words: you are alone, you are finished, you are not forgiven. Faith takes up God's truth and the fire goes out.
Cultural Notes
War and weapon imagery may be sensitive in some communities. Use paper arrows, sticky notes, or words tossed into a bin if armour imagery would distress the room. Keep Paul's biblical metaphor central and non-aggressive.
