Notes to Gospel Workers: Becoming Fellow Workers for Truth
The congregation writes short encouragement cards for gospel workers, seeing from 3 John that supporting witnesses makes the church fellow workers for the truth.
Big Idea
Those who strengthen faithful witnesses share in the work of the truth.
Delivery Script
Hook This looks small. [hold up a blank card] But encouragement travels farther than we think.
1. Open the Word. There is a letter in your Bible so short it barely fills a page. Three John. One chapter. One man writing to another. And tucked inside it, a truth that changes what we think we are doing here today. [open Bible to 3 John 1:5-8, read aloud]
2. Name the truth. John tells Gaius something remarkable. Supporting faithful workers, receiving them, sending them on their way, makes the church fellow workers for the truth. [set the Bible down] Not admirers. Not sponsors. Workers. Partners in the same mission.
3. Hand out the cards. So we are going to do something about that right now. [signal for cards and pens to be distributed] You have a blank card. One minute. Write a short encouragement to someone who has gone out for the sake of the Name. It does not need to be long. It needs to be real.
4. Set the boundaries. One thing to remember as you write. No advice, no criticism, no money promises, no personal contact details. [pause] Just encouragement. That is the gift. That is enough.
5. Collect the cards. [invite people to bring cards forward into envelopes] These will be screened and sent to our approved gospel workers and mission partners. They will arrive somewhere, carried by ordinary post, and they will remind someone far from home that they are not alone.
6. Pray together. [bow to pray] We pray now not with names or locations where that would be unwise, but by role, by region, by the work they carry. Lord, strengthen these workers and the churches they serve.
Land Romans 10 asks: how shall they preach unless they are sent? Hebrews 10 urges us to spur one another on. A card in an envelope is not a small thing when it is part of that sending. You did not go. But you became a fellow worker for the truth.
Call to action Become a fellow worker through prayer, encouragement, hospitality, and faithful support, not as an occasional kindness, but as your share in the gospel.

Safety Notes
Do not publish worker names, locations, or addresses publicly where security is sensitive. Screen cards before sending, especially from children. Keep notes encouraging, not advisory or critical.
Theological Grounding
3 John 1:5-8 presents support for faithful gospel workers as participation in truth, not merely kindness. The workers go for the sake of the Name, and the church receives and sends them in a manner worthy of God. This grounds encouragement in partnership with the gospel rather than sentimental admiration.
Preacher Tips
- Use the phrase gospel workers if missionary language carries colonial baggage in your setting.
- Give sample sentences so children do not write confusing or intrusive notes.
- Screen every card before posting or delivering.
- Do not use the exercise to pressure people for public financial pledges.
If Things Go Wrong
1Cards include insensitive advice.
Recovery: Screen them after the service and send only appropriate notes.
2Security-sensitive workers are identified publicly.
Recovery: Use initials, roles, or broad regions and address envelopes privately.
3The action feels like token support.
Recovery: Connect it to ongoing prayer, hospitality, and practical partnership.

Response Prompts
1.How does 3 John describe those who support gospel workers?
2.What encouragement would strengthen a tired witness?
3.How can our church support truth beyond this room?
Application Questions
- 1Who is serving the truth quietly and needs strengthening?
- 2Do I see support work as real gospel partnership?
Call to Action
Invite the congregation to become fellow workers through prayer, encouragement, hospitality, and faithful support.
Focus Note
3 John commends faithful hospitality to travelling gospel workers, even when they were strangers. John says such support makes the church fellow workers for the truth. Not everyone travels, preaches, translates, plants, or serves cross-culturally. But the church strengthens those who do. Encouragement is not a substitute for prayer, giving, or wise sending, but it is a real ministry.
Cultural Notes
The word missionary can be misunderstood or historically loaded. Where needed, say gospel workers, church planters, Bible translators, local evangelists, or servants of the church.
