Magnet in Sand: What Holiness Draws Out
A magnet passed under a sealed tray of sand draws hidden iron filings into view. Psalm 24 shows that clean hands and a pure heart belong together before the holy King.
Big Idea
Holiness is not a clean surface; it is a heart drawn into truth before God.
Delivery Script
Hook Psalm 24 asks who may ascend the hill of the Lord. The answer reaches both the hands and the heart.
1. Lay it out. This is a sealed tray of sand. [place the sealed tray on the white cloth and tilt it gently until the surface smooths flat] From here it looks clean. Ordinary. Nothing seems hidden.
2. Pass the magnet. Watch what is already in there. [move the magnet slowly underneath the tray, tracing a steady line] The sand shifts. Dark lines gather. Something rises that you could not see a moment ago.
3. Let it land. The magnet did not create that. [pause, hold still] It revealed what was already there.
4. Read the psalm. [open the Bible and read Psalm 24:3-4 aloud] "Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart." Two things. Not one. Hands and heart. Conduct and loyalty. Psalm 24 will not let us split them.
5. Press the truth. God is not impressed by a tidy surface while the heart clings elsewhere. [pass the magnet slowly under the tray a second time] Clean hands are public. A pure heart is what you hold to when no one is checking. Psalm 15 says the one who may dwell on the Lord's holy hill is the one who speaks truth from the heart, not just in the meeting room.
6. Hold up the Bible. But here is where the gospel holds everything together. [lift the Bible and hold it beside the tray] Hebrews 10:22 does not say come if you have cleaned yourself up. It says draw near, with hearts sprinkled clean. Jesus opens the way. And His Spirit does what the magnet does: He draws hidden loyalties into the light, not to condemn us, but to cleanse what we could not see.
Land Holiness is not about maintaining a clean surface. It is a heart that comes honestly before a holy God and lets Him draw out what has been smoothed over. Let the Lord reveal what is already there. Clean hands and a pure heart are His work in people who come honestly.
Call to action Before the next gathering, ask God to show you one hidden loyalty and bring it to Him in confession.

Props & Setup
Props Required
- 1Clear lidded trayA shallow food-storage box works. Seal the lid with tape.
- 2Dry sand xenough to cover the baseUse clean craft sand so the filings show clearly.
- 3Iron filings xone teaspoonMix through the sand before sealing. Do not use loose on stage.
- 4Strong magnetA magnet wand is safer and easier to control than a bare neodymium magnet.
Setup Instructions
- 1Mix a small amount of iron filings into the sand and seal the container.
- 2Test the magnet from underneath and from the side until the filings gather visibly.
- 3Keep the container on a white surface for contrast.
- 4Prepare one sentence that prevents moralism: Christ gives access; the Spirit purifies what we cannot cleanse ourselves.
Stage Execution
- 1Place the sealed tray on the table and smooth the sand by tilting it gently.
- 2Say, From here this looks like ordinary sand. Nothing seems hidden.
- 3Move the magnet slowly underneath the tray. Let the dark filings gather into a visible line.
- 4Pause, then say, The magnet did not create the iron. It revealed what was already there.
- 5Read Psalm 24:3-4 and point to the pairing: clean hands and a pure heart.
- 6Move the magnet again and say, God is not impressed by a tidy surface while the heart clings elsewhere.
- 7Lift the Bible beside the tray: Jesus gives us access, and His Spirit draws hidden loyalties into the light for cleansing.
Safety Notes
Keep iron filings sealed inside a clear bag or lidded tray. Loose filings can irritate eyes or be inhaled. Keep strong magnets away from phones, bank cards, watches and medical devices.
Theological Grounding
Psalm 24:3-4 belongs to worship language about approaching the Lord's holy place. Clean hands name outward conduct, while a pure heart names inner desire and loyalty, so the psalm refuses the split between public respectability and private idolatry. In Christian preaching, Hebrews 10:22 keeps the gospel centre clear: we draw near because Christ has opened the way, and we come with hearts sprinkled clean.
Preacher Tips
- Use sealed filings. A messy science demo about holiness will distract from the point and create avoidable safety issues.
- Move the magnet slowly. Fast movement makes the filings jump like a trick; slow movement lets the hidden material become visible.
- Do not say pure hearts attract God's presence as if worship is earned. Say Christ opens access and holiness responds to Him.
- This is a common classroom magnet demonstration. Acknowledge the borrowed science and let Scripture carry the theology.
If Things Go Wrong
1The magnet is too weak to move the filings.
Recovery: Bring the magnet to the side of the tray or use a backup tray with more filings near the surface.
2The filings scatter too widely to see.
Recovery: Tilt the tray towards the front and gather the filings into one corner with the magnet.
3The message becomes self-cleansing moralism.
Recovery: Read Hebrews 10:22 and say, We come because Jesus has opened the way.
4A child wants to touch the filings or magnet.
Recovery: Keep the tray sealed and step back from the front edge before inviting questions.
Adaptations
young children
Use paper clips under a cloth and a magnet wand. Say, God sees what we cannot see and helps us tell the truth.
older children
Let children predict which hidden objects the magnet will pull, then connect clean hands and pure hearts.
teens
Apply the hidden filings to private messages, secret habits and curated public image without naming examples from the room.
small group
Place the sealed tray in the centre, read Psalm 24 and James 4:8, then give silent confession time.
Response Prompts
1.Where have you smoothed the surface while something hidden still clings?
2.What would clean hands and a pure heart mean in one specific relationship?
3.How does Christ's opened access make honest confession safer?
Application Questions
- 1How can Psalm 24 be preached without implying that human purity earns access to God?
- 2Where does your congregation need to reconnect outward conduct and inner desire?
Call to Action
Before the next gathering, ask God to show one hidden loyalty and bring it to Him in confession.
Focus Note
We can make the surface look settled. We can smooth the sand. But hidden material still responds when a stronger field passes near. Holiness is like that. Not because God is hunting for dirt, but because the holy God loves truth. He draws what is hidden into the light so it can be confessed, cleansed and re-ordered before Him.
Cultural Notes
Sand and magnets translate widely, but iron filings may not be easy to obtain. Use paper clips hidden under dry rice or small metal washers under cloth. Avoid purity language that shames bodies; the biblical focus is covenant integrity before God.
