Lighthouse Light: Showing the Way Home

Children help assemble a simple lighthouse with an LED light, then hear Jesus say His people are the light of the world. Light warns, guides and points to the Father.

Big Idea

Jesus makes His people visible light so others can see the way and praise the Father.

Delivery Script

Hook Jesus used simple pictures people could see: salt, light, a city on a hill. Today we will build one small picture of light.

1. The boat in danger. [hold up the toy boat near the blue cloth waves] Look at this little boat. The water is dark, the waves are rough, and the boat has no idea which way is safe. Boats need help when it is dark and the water is dangerous. So what does a boat need? A lighthouse.

2. Build the lighthouse. [hold up the cardboard lighthouse tube] We have got one right here, but it needs a top. Who wants to help build it? [invite one child to place the top on the lighthouse] Perfect. Look at that. A real lighthouse, built by a real helper.

3. Switch it on. Now every lighthouse needs one thing. [invite a second child to switch on the LED tea light inside] There it is. [pause] The lighthouse does not swim out and push the boat. It does not shout. It just shines, so the boat can see the way home.

4. Read the Word. [open the Bible and read Matthew 5:14] "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden." Jesus said that to His friends. He says it to His people today. And then He tells us why. [read verse 16] Good works, seen by others, so the glory goes to the Father. Not to us. To Him.

5. Guide the boat. [slowly move the toy boat across the blue cloth, steering it towards the lighthouse light and away from the waves] Watch. The light is shining, and the boat finds its way. It is not the lighthouse boasting. It is just doing what it was made to do.

6. Land the truth. Jesus is the true Light. John calls Him the light of the world. We only shine because we belong to Him. [gesture to the glowing lighthouse] Like this little light: put it in the dark, and it shows the way home. That is what His people are for.

Land You are not the source. Jesus is. But He has put His light in you, and when you do good things quietly and kindly, people do not just see you. They catch a glimpse of the Father. So this week, shine in a way that helps someone see the goodness of God, not just the brightness of you.

Call to action Choose one quiet good work this week that helps someone see the Father more clearly.

Props & Setup

Props Required

  • 1
Cardboard lighthouse tubePre-cut and mostly assembled; children can add the roof or light.
  • 2
LED tea light or battery lampBright enough to see but not painful to look at.
  • 3
Blue cloth or paper wavesRepresents dangerous water without needing a detailed seascape.
  • 4
Toy boatSmall enough to move by hand.
  • 5
    BibleMark Matthew 5:14-16.

Setup Instructions

  1. 1Pre-build most of the lighthouse so the live assembly takes under one minute.
  2. 2Check the LED battery before the session.
  3. 3Place the boat and waves where children can see without crowding the stage.

Stage Execution

  1. 1Show the toy boat near the blue cloth and say, Boats need help when it is dark and the water is dangerous.
  2. 2Invite one child or helper to place the top on the lighthouse.
  3. 3Invite another helper to switch on the LED. Say, The lighthouse does not push the boat. It shines so the boat can see.
  4. 4Read Matthew 5:14, then add verse 16 if the children can stay with you.
  5. 5Move the toy boat slowly towards the light and away from the rocks or waves.
  6. 6Say, Jesus is the true Light, and He makes His people shine so others can see good works and praise the Father.

Safety Notes

Use an LED tea light or battery lamp only. Do not use candles, lasers, strobe lights, or darken the room so much that children cannot move safely. Keep small parts away from very young children.

Theological Grounding

Matthew 5:14 is spoken to disciples shaped by the Beatitudes, so the light is the visible life of the kingdom. Verse 16 explains the purpose: good deeds are seen, but glory goes to the Father. John 8:12 keeps Christ central as the light of the world; disciples shine derivatively because they belong to Him.

Preacher Tips

  • Keep the build very simple. Children lose the point if they watch you wrestle with tape and cardboard.
  • Do not overplay darkness. A little dimming is enough; fearful darkness can unsettle young children.
  • Lighthouse illustrations are common, so anchor this one in Matthew 5:16: visible goodness points to the Father.
  • Use one child helper at a time and tell them exactly what to do: place the roof, press the switch, then sit down.

If Things Go Wrong

1The LED does not turn on.

Recovery: Use a spare light or say, A lighthouse without light cannot do its job, which proves the point.

2Children become more interested in the boat than the verse.

Recovery: Hold the boat still, point to the light, and ask one clear question: What helped the boat see?

3The image sounds like the church saves people.

Recovery: Say clearly, Jesus saves; His people bear witness to Him.

4The room is too bright to see the LED.

Recovery: Cup your hands around the light or use a brighter battery lamp.

Adaptations

teens

Discuss the difference between performative visibility and good works that direct attention to the Father.

small group

Ask each person to name one dark or confusing place where steady witness matters.

intergenerational

Use a larger LED lantern and one projected image of a lighthouse instead of children assembling props.

older children

Let them place paper rocks and then move the boat safely by following the light.

Response Prompts

1.What does a light help people do?

2.Who is the true Light we belong to?

3.What good thing could you do this week that points someone to the Father?

Application Questions

  • 1How can visible witness avoid showing off?
  • 2Where does your group need to shine steadily rather than loudly?

Call to Action

Choose one quiet good work this week that helps someone see the Father more clearly.

Focus Note

A lighthouse does not make itself important by shouting at boats. It keeps shining. It warns about danger and helps people find the safe way. Jesus says, You are the light of the world. That does not mean we replace Jesus. It means His life in us becomes visible. When people see good works, they are meant to look past us and praise the Father.

Cultural Notes

Not every audience has seen a lighthouse, but most understand light helping people avoid danger. If needed, replace it with a torch on a path, a safe crossing signal, or a lamp in a window.
