Fruit Charades: You Can See What Is Growing
Children act out fruit of the Spirit words without speaking. The room learns that real fruit is visible in ordinary life, not merely claimed with religious words.
Big Idea
Jesus says fruit can be recognised because inner life eventually shows outside.
Delivery Script
Hook Today we will see whether a word can be recognised before anyone says it aloud. No talking. No clues. Just what you can actually see.
1. Show the cards. [hold up the fruit of the Spirit word cards so the room can see them] Each of these cards has a word on it. A real word, describing a real thing that grows in a person's life. We are going to act them out. No sound. Not a single syllable.
2. First actor up. [choose one child, whisper the word patience, and whisper "act like you are waiting calmly"] Watch carefully. This child knows the word. You have to find it. Ready? Go.
3. Let the room guess. [start the timer, let the room call out guesses] Look at the face. Look at the body. What is that telling you? Come on, someone has it.
4. Celebrate and move. [ring the bell at the right answer, cheer briefly, move straight to the next card: kindness or self-control] Yes! You could see it. Nobody said a word, and you saw it. Let's go again. [repeat the whisper and acting with the next child, keep the energy quick and warm]
5. Read the verse. [open the Bible, read Matthew 7:16 aloud] Jesus said, "By their fruit you will recognise them." Not by their vocabulary. Not by the words they use about themselves. By what is actually visible growing in their life.
6. Name the grower. [set down the Bible, point to the word cards] [read or quote Galatians 5:22-23] Love. Joy. Peace. Patience. Kindness. Goodness. Faithfulness. Gentleness. Self-control. These are not a checklist. The Holy Spirit grows this fruit in people who belong to Jesus. You cannot manufacture it. You cannot perform it long enough to make it real. It has to come from inside.
Land A tree does not shout that it is an apple tree. It just grows apples, and everyone can see them. Jesus is not asking you to prove yourself with religious words. He is saying that real life on the inside will always show on the outside. You can see what is growing.

Safety Notes
Choose actions that do not require running, lifting or touching another child. Keep the playing space clear and let shy children pass.
Theological Grounding
Matthew 7:16 sits in Jesus' warning about false prophets, so fruit is not a party game in the text. It is visible evidence that reveals what kind of tree is present. Galatians 5 names the fruit of the Spirit, showing that Christian character is produced by the Spirit's life, not performed to earn God's love.
Preacher Tips
- Choose the easiest words first. Patience, kindness and self-control are usually clearer than faithfulness for young children.
- Fruit of the Spirit games are common in children's ministry. Present this as a practical version of a familiar activity, not as a novel method.
- Do not turn it into a competition about who is most loving. The fruit belongs to the Spirit's work.
- If a child freezes, act it out with them or let them choose a friend. Passing is allowed.
- Acknowledge that fruit grows over time. Children should not hear, If you fail once, you are a bad tree.
If Things Go Wrong
1The room guesses wildly.
Recovery: Give one clue: This is something the Spirit grows in us.
2A child acts too dramatically and the room laughs at them.
Recovery: Thank them, reset the tone, and keep the next round simple.
3The lesson becomes behaviour management
Recovery: Recover by saying, We ask Jesus to grow this fruit in us.
4The cards are too small to read.
Recovery: Speak each guessed word aloud and project the list if possible.
Adaptations
teens
Use silent phone-message scenarios: patience before replying, kindness in a group chat, self-control before posting.
small group
Let pairs choose one fruit and describe a real-life situation where it would be visible this week.
intergenerational
Use adult volunteers for two rounds, then invite children to name the fruit.
online
Have participants type guesses in chat while one leader acts on camera.
Response Prompts
1.Which fruit was easiest to recognise?
2.Where do you need Jesus to grow fruit in you?
3.What is one way kindness or self-control could be seen this week?
Application Questions
- 1Do my words and actions show the same fruit I say I believe in?
- 2How can adults help children notice growth without shaming slow growth?

Focus Note
Keep the mood playful, but land the point clearly: fruit is shown in life, and the Spirit is the grower.
Cultural Notes
Gestures mean different things in different places. Avoid signs that rely on local slang. Use simple actions such as waiting, sharing, stopping or helping, which translate more widely.
