The Fishing Net: Following Jesus Before Gathering People

A small net gathers toy fish from a marked circle, helping children see evangelism as Jesus forming followers who gently draw people towards Him.

Big Idea

Jesus makes His followers into people who gather others towards life with Him.

Delivery Script

Hook Jesus called fishermen with a fishing word. And two thousand years later, that word still tells us exactly how this works.

1. Walk to the fish. [walk to the taped circle of toy fish, hold the net low at your side] Look at all of these. Just sitting here. Waiting.

2. Name the fishermen. Jesus met real fishermen by a real lake, and He used words they already understood. Nets. Fish. Work they knew with their hands. [crouch toward the circle, keeping the net low and away from the children]

3. Gather gently. Watch what happens when the net just... settles. [lower the net gently over the fish and let your helper draw the edges in] No grabbing. No chasing. No pressure. Just a net, doing what a net does.

4. Read the words. [stand and open the Bible to Matthew 4:19, read clearly] "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Did you catch the order in that sentence?

5. Name the order. Follow first. Then He makes you. Evangelism does not begin with a clever plan or the right words. It begins with following Jesus. He does the making. [hold the open Bible steady for a moment]

6. Hold one fish. [lift one toy fish from the net and hold it up in your palm] Here is what this is not. This is not a target to win. This is not a score. [look at it gently] This is a neighbour. A friend. Someone to love and invite towards Jesus.

7. Place it down. [set the fish carefully beside the open Bible] The catch belongs to Him. Always has.

Land Jesus does not ask you to pressure people or perform a technique. He asks you to follow Him, and He promises to shape you into someone who gently draws others towards life with Him. The net is His. The fish are His. You just show up close to Jesus.

Call to action Can you name one kind thing you could do this week that might point someone towards Jesus?

Transitions

In

Use this when introducing mission to children or correcting pushy ideas of evangelism.

Out

Move from the net to one simple way the group can invite, serve, or speak about Jesus this week.

Props & Setup

Props Required

  • 1
Small netA child's fishing net or soft mesh bag works better than a real weighted net.
  • 2
Toy fish x8Use soft fish, paper fish, or beanbags.

Setup Instructions

  1. 1Place the fish inside a taped circle before the children arrive.
  2. 2Practise lowering the net over the fish rather than flinging it.
  3. 3Choose one child or adult helper to gather the fish after the net lands.
  4. 4Prepare to explain that people are not prey; the image is about rescue and invitation.

Stage Execution

  1. 1Walk to the circle of toy fish and hold the net low.
  2. 2Say, "Jesus met real fishermen and used words they understood."
  3. 3Lower the net gently over the fish and let the helper gather them in.
  4. 4Read Matthew 4:19.
  5. 5Say, "Notice the order: follow Me, and I will make you. Evangelism begins with following Jesus."
  6. 6Hold one toy fish in your hand and add, "People are never targets to win. They are neighbours to love and invite to Jesus."
  7. 7Put the fish near the open Bible and say, "The catch belongs to Him."

Safety Notes

Use a soft, lightweight net. Do not throw it towards people, faces, lights, cables, or microphones. Tape the target area flat so no one trips.

Theological Grounding

Matthew places the call to mission after the call to follow. Jesus' words hold both invitation and transformation: disciples come after Him, and He makes them fishers of people. The demo works when the net represents gathered response to Jesus, not pressure, conquest, or clever technique.

Preacher Tips

  • Do not cast the net dramatically. A gentle lowering is safer and better theology.
  • Use the phrase "fishers of people" for clarity with children.
  • If a child misses the fish, celebrate the attempt and gather them by hand.
  • Keep one sentence for dignity: people are loved by God, never hunted.

If Things Go Wrong

1The net tangles or misses.

Recovery: Smile, untangle it slowly, and say, "Even fishermen need patience."

2Children start throwing fish.

Recovery: Collect the fish, place them by the Bible, and continue from the verse.

3The metaphor sounds manipulative.

Recovery: Say clearly, "We do not trap people. We invite people to Jesus."

Adaptations

teens

Use the net to discuss the difference between witness, pressure, and online argument.

small group

Place names of places, not people, on paper fish and pray for faithful witness there.

intergenerational

Use a larger cloth net and adult helper so the action is visible.

online

Use a tabletop net and close-up camera with paper fish.

Response Prompts

1.What did Jesus say first: follow Me, or go catch people?

2.How can we invite someone without pushing them?

3.Who makes us fishers of people?

Application Questions

  • 1Am I trying to do mission without following Jesus closely?
  • 2Where can I witness with gentleness this week?

Call to Action

Invite children to name one kind action that could point someone towards Jesus.

Focus Note

Matthew 4:19 is not a command to argue harder. Jesus calls Simon and Andrew to come after Him, then promises to make them fishers of people. The making belongs to Jesus. The net shows gathering, but the preacher must say plainly that people are not objects or trophies. Evangelism is loving witness from people who are being formed by Christ.

Cultural Notes

Fishing is not familiar or positive everywhere. If nets suggest harm or exploitation in your context, use a rescue basket, gathering cloth, or invitation cards instead.
