Building Bricks: Instructions for the Path

Two volunteers build the same small brick model, one following instructions and one ignoring them, helping children see why God's word is given for obedient life.

Big Idea

God's word is not a decoration for the shelf; it is instruction for the path.

Delivery Script

Hook Same bricks. Same table. Two builders. Let's see what makes the difference.

1. Show the goal. [hold up the picture of the finished model so the room can see it] This is what we are trying to build today. That is the target. Everyone see it? Good. Hold that picture in your head.

2. Set the builders. I need two brilliant volunteers. [bring two volunteers to the small table] You two are our builders. Now here is the twist. [hand one volunteer the instruction sheet and their brick set, hand the other volunteer only their brick set] One of you has the instructions. One of you is going rogue. Ready? Build.

3. Let them build. [step back and let both volunteers build for a short time, encourage the room to watch] Come on builders, let's go. No peeking at each other's sheets. Room, keep your eyes on both of them.

4. Pause and compare. [call time and bring both models to the front] Right, let's have a look. [hold the models side by side] Hmm. What do we notice? One of these is looking a little more like the picture. And one of these is... its own adventure. Both builders worked hard. That is not the point. The point is this: one of them had something to follow.

5. Read the word. [set the models down and open to Joshua 1:8] God is sending Joshua into something enormous. A whole new land, a whole new mission. And before Joshua takes a single step, God says this. [read Joshua 1:8] Keep it in your mouth. Think on it. Do what is written. Do not let it leave you.

6. Name the three things. God told Joshua three things. Say it, think it, do it. [hold up one finger at a time] Say it. Think it. Do it. Not just read it once and move on. Live inside it.

7. Hold up the sheet. [pick up the instruction sheet and hold it steady] These instructions did not ruin the building. They shaped the builder. They gave the builder something true to follow. That is exactly what God's word does. It is not decoration. It is not a rule list to make life dull. It is the path for people who want to follow God faithfully.

Land Joshua did not carry the word around because it looked impressive. He carried it because he needed it for every step he took. So when we open the Bible, we are not just collecting facts. We are learning the path.

Call to action This week, pick one Bible verse, hear it, say it out loud, and find one way to practise it.

Props & Setup

Props Required

  • 1
Building brick sets x2Use a simple model with six to ten pieces so it finishes quickly.
  • 2
Instruction sheetLarge pictures work better than small text for children.
  • 3
Finished model pictureShow the intended result at the end.

Setup Instructions

  1. 1Prepare two identical piles of bricks in separate bowls.
  2. 2Brief one helper to follow the instructions calmly.
  3. 3Brief the other helper to build randomly without being silly or disruptive.
  4. 4Keep the model simple enough to finish in under two minutes.

Stage Execution

  1. 1Show the picture of the finished model and say, "This is what we are trying to build."
  2. 2Give one volunteer the instructions and the other only the bricks.
  3. 3Start both builders at the same time.
  4. 4After a short time, pause and compare the models.
  5. 5Read Joshua 1:8.
  6. 6Say, "God told Joshua to keep the word in his mouth, think on it, and do what was written."
  7. 7Hold up the instruction sheet and say, "Instructions are not there to spoil the building. They help the builder become faithful."

Safety Notes

Use large bricks for young children and keep small pieces away from toddlers. Do not turn the slower volunteer into the joke; the point is the value of instruction.

Theological Grounding

Joshua 1:8 connects Scripture with mouth, meditation, and obedience. The promise of prospering is covenantal faithfulness in Joshua's mission, not a blank cheque for personal success. For children, the key point is that God's word forms obedient trust, guiding God's people as they follow Him.

Preacher Tips

  • Use generic building bricks if branded bricks are unavailable or too expensive.
  • Do not let the wrong builder act foolishly. Children learn better when the contrast is clear but kind.
  • Keep the instruction sheet visible. The visual must stay tied to Joshua 1:8.
  • Avoid saying Bible reading makes life easy. Joshua still had battles, but God's word guided obedience.

If Things Go Wrong

1The random builder accidentally makes something good.

Recovery: Say, "It may be fun, but it is not the builder's intended design."

2The instructed builder gets stuck.

Recovery: Help them read the next step and say, "Sometimes we need help understanding the instructions."

3Children focus only on the toy.

Recovery: Hold up the Bible and the instruction sheet together before making the final point.

Adaptations

teens

Use two flat-pack-style diagrams and ask which life decisions expose whether we want guidance or autonomy.

small group

Give teams the same model, one with instructions and one without, then discuss obedience and meditation.

online

Use an overhead camera so viewers can see both building attempts side by side.

Response Prompts

1.Why did the instructions help the builder?

2.What did God tell Joshua to do with His word?

3.How can we listen to God's word this week?

Application Questions

  • 1Do I only own a Bible, or do I listen to it?
  • 2What one instruction from God can I practise today?

Call to Action

Invite children to choose one Bible verse to hear, say, and practise during the week.

Focus Note

The child with instructions is not less creative. They know what they are building. Joshua was about to lead God's people into a new land, and God did not give him a lucky charm. He gave him the book of the law to speak, meditate on, and obey. The Bible is not only something we own or display. God gives His word so His people can walk wisely with Him.

Cultural Notes

Interlocking bricks are common but not universal. Use paper folding, a simple recipe card, or a drawing copied from instructions if building toys are unfamiliar or unavailable.
