Balloon Static: The Spirit's Unseen Conviction
A balloon rubbed on cloth moves paper pieces without touching them, giving children a careful picture of the Spirit's unseen work of conviction in John 16:8.
Big Idea
The Spirit's work may be unseen, but He brings real conviction that turns people toward Christ.
Delivery Script
Hook Some real work cannot be seen directly, but its effect can be seen. Watch this tray, and watch carefully.
1. Show the labels. These three pieces of paper each carry a word. [place the labelled paper pieces on the tray] Sin. Righteousness. Judgment. Three words from Jesus himself. Hold that thought.
2. Nothing yet. I have a balloon. Perfectly ordinary. [hold the balloon above the tray without rubbing it] Nothing moves. Nothing happens. The paper just sits there. I am going to change one thing.
3. Rub the cloth. [rub the balloon firmly on the wool or fleece cloth for several seconds] Same balloon. Same tray. Same room. But something has changed, even though you cannot see it.
4. Bring it close. Watch the paper. [bring the balloon near the pieces and let them lift or slide] I did not touch the paper. Not once. But something unseen acted on it, and the paper could not stay still.
5. Name what happened. That is the picture. Now hear the truth behind it. [read John 16:8 aloud] "When He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment."
6. Point to the labels. [point to each labelled piece in turn] Sin. Righteousness. Judgment. Jesus says the Spirit convicts the world concerning all three. Not vague guilt. Not a general unease. Specific, clear truth, bearing witness to Christ.
7. Name the limits. This picture has limits, and I want you to know them. [set the balloon aside on the tray] The Holy Spirit is not electricity. He is not a force. He is God, and He works personally, drawing people toward Jesus, not just moving them about.
Land You could not see the charge on that balloon, but the paper felt it and could not pretend nothing had happened. The Spirit's conviction is like that. Real, targeted, impossible to ignore. When conviction comes, the wise response is not to hide from it, but to turn toward Jesus.
Call to action When truth presses on your heart, ask the Spirit to lead you to Jesus rather than away from Him.

Safety Notes
Check latex allergy policies. Rub the balloon on wool or fleece, not on a child's hair, and keep popped balloon pieces away from young children.
Theological Grounding
John 16:8 belongs to Jesus' teaching about the Helper who comes after His departure. The Spirit convicts the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment, with verses 9-11 explaining those categories in relation to unbelief, Jesus' return to the Father, and the ruler of this world being judged. Conviction is therefore not vague guilt; it is Spirit-given truth that bears witness to Christ.
Preacher Tips
- Say the limitation clearly. Children can easily reduce the Spirit to an invisible force if you do not name Him as God.
- Use a cloth rather than hair. It avoids embarrassment, hygiene issues, and consent problems.
- If static is weak, make the paper lighter or switch to a pre-tested plastic comb.
- Do not overplay guilt. John 16 points to Christ and truth, not to making children feel bad.
If Things Go Wrong
1The paper does not move.
Recovery: Use the backup comb or say, "Even when the prop fails, Jesus' promise about the Spirit does not."
2The balloon pops.
Recovery: Pause, collect the pieces immediately, and continue with the prepared spare or the verse card.
3The lesson sounds impersonal.
Recovery: Repeat, "The Spirit is not a power we use. He is God, and He works personally."
Adaptations
teens
Discuss the difference between shame, conscience, and Spirit-given conviction that points to Christ.
small group
Read John 16:7-11 and ask what each conviction category means in context.
online
Use a close-up camera and larger paper pieces against a dark tray.
intergenerational
Use a plastic comb and tissue paper instead of a balloon.
Response Prompts
1.What moved the paper even though I did not touch it?
2.Why must we not say the Holy Spirit is electricity?
3.What does Jesus say the Spirit convicts the world about?
Application Questions
- 1How do I respond when the Spirit exposes sin or unbelief?
- 2Do I treat conviction as condemnation, or as an invitation to come to Christ?
Call to Action
When truth presses on your heart, ask the Spirit to lead you to Jesus rather than away from Him.
Focus Note
The paper moved before my hand touched it. Static electricity gives us a small picture of unseen effect. Jesus says the Spirit will convict the world. That means He brings truth home to the heart: sin is real, righteousness is found in Christ, and judgment is not pretend. We cannot control the Spirit like a balloon. We can listen when He makes truth clear.
Cultural Notes
Balloons may be unavailable, restricted, or associated with parties rather than teaching. A plastic comb, ruler, or static wand can carry the same science picture without relying on a specific celebration object.
